The Hillsborough Caldera

The Eno River region was part of a volcanic center on top of a large magma chamber. This magma chamber of molten rock may have been at least 43.5 km by 14 km (27 by 8.5 miles) in diameter and may have erupted in great cataclysmic volcanic activity. It is speculated that the magma chamber may have emptyed of a majority of its contents and formed a large void underground. The roof of the magma chamber collapsed into the void, forming the Hillsborough Caldera.
