The Hillsborough Caldera

The Hillsborough Caldera, similar yet smaller to the modern-day Yellowstone region, had abundant hot springs where hot water, heated by magma, circulated through the previously deposited ash and other volcanic debris. Evidence of hydrothermally altered rock is present in the pyrophyllite deposits associated with Occoneechee Mountain.
